Sailing School in Croatia

"The basics of sailing" course is designed for anyone who've always, whether because of other people's tales, or simply by watching "the lucky ones", felt that the wind, the sails and the sea can provide unique satisfaction, a satisfaction that cannot be described by words, but needs to be experienced in person.

Theory and practice of basic sailing skills

The power of the wind, the perfect simplicity of the sails and the unpredictability of the sea bring us back to a forgotten, but primal relationship with nature. A feeling of a renewed bond with nature makes sailing so enchanting, becoming a part of life we cannot wait to return to.

Program:
  • terminology basic points of sailing (close hauling, reaching, broad reaching, down wind)
  • port/startboard side / wind ward/lee ward side
  • what makes the boat move forward
  • positions of crew members
  • sails and trimming of sails
  • reefing of the sails
  • sailing in course avoiding collisions at the sea
  • tack, gybe
  • anchoring
  • apparent wind
  • compass rosse
  • meteorology - basics using a nautical map and celestial navigation
  • knots
  • radiotelephony safety

Sports sailing or cruising?

By acquiring basic sailing skills, and by being certain that we want to exceed them, you have to decide between two types of courses. We offer two types of advanced courses, related to two different ways of enjoying sailing: cruising and sailing techniques. This does not imply that the level of knowledge and skill acuqired by one of these courses differs greatly from the other. The "cruising" course focuses on special techniques and skills which enable it's participants for taking longer cruises on their own. The advanced sailing techniques course deals with techniques neccessary to participate even in regattas.

Basics of cruising or Sailing techniques
Goal: adapting to the sailing maritime zone, the weather conditions, cruising at night, using classic (celestial) and modern (satellite) navigation, planning the course, place and time of arrival based on the sinoptic situation.
Cruising course is 6 days out of the base marina cruising into the Kornati Islands. Advanced course - sailing techniques is returning every evening back to the base marina Jezera and additional one night navigation.

Program:
  • preparation of the boat for sailing
  • navigation,geographical latitude and longitude, measurement units in navigation, orientation at sea, sea charts
  • navigation at night
  • sailing in course
  • spinaker
  • meteorology (wind, air pressure, cyclones and anticyclones, weather report)
  • manoverboard
  • climbing the mast during sailing
  • approaching the shore using sails or engine
  • general notions on engines
  • maritime radiotelephony sevice (table of VHF sevices of Croatian shore radio stations, general connecting procedure, special procedure, distress signal and message, urgency signal and message, safety signal and message, usage of the international spelling alphabet, system of digital selective calling)
  • general notions of engine

Being responsible for the ship and the crew - swiftly, persistently and safely

Goal: Training the students to independently take the sailboat, control the boat, manage the boat and crew - regardless of their experience.
Age: for all adults Previous knowledge: completed one of our advanced courses
Equipement: sportswear, rainsuit, boots, gloves, cap, knife, flashlight
The course takes place: all year Maritime zone: the local waters of the island of Murter /map of the maritime zone/
Duration of the course: 7 days
Refining courses: The instructors course

Special attention is devoted to the safety of the ship and crew, and getting to know and learn about the safety equipment.

Program:
  • familiarsing with the boat and organisation of the crew (sails, engine, kitchen, navigation, equipment)
  • satellite navigation GPS
  • engine
  • batery
  • manoverboard at night
  • serious damage of the boat (boat stranding, water intrusion, fire)
