When talking about safety of your
pet aboard charter yacht, there are a few things to consider. To
prevent any dangers of having a pet aboard, follow these tips. If
this is your pet's first sailing trip, it may be scared so you need
to create a safe area for your pet.
Fear and panic
If you do not know how your pet
could react to sailing conditions, take it on a few short
boat trips. Bring its favorite toys and blanket -
these are necessary for your pet to feel safe aboard the charter
yacht. Animals tend to panic in unfamiliar situations and can get
violent when scared, so you need to make sure your pet does not
hurt itself or someone else.
Specific commands
Dogs need to be taught
simple and specific commands prior to the trip. We
are certain that your dog is already quite disciplined, however
these commands need to be specifically intended for the dog's
behavior aboard the charter yacht.
Falling overboard
You need to be extra
careful during sailing. Your dog should not be in the way
or it or someone else might end up hurt or overboard. Your pet may
be a good swimmer but it will need a pet flotation
device as it may save its life. If the conditions are
especially rough, it may be a good idea to tether your dog to the
boat and put a PFD on the dog. A smart thing would be to attach a
swim platform to the yacht. In that case, if the dog falls
overboard, it would be easier to recover the animal.
Sea-sickness and
sunburns
If your pet gets seasick, wait
until its stomach calms and then give it some milk. Travel-induced
stress is also a danger for your pet. It can cause constipation, to
fix it, add a daily teaspoon of vegetable oil to its food. If the
pet gets sunburnt, hypoallergenic sunblocks for humans should
do.
Leash and muzzle
When on shore, keep your
dog on a leash, and if needed put a muzzle on the dog's
snout. This is normally necessary with the larger dog breeds or if
it is demanded by local laws.
