History and sights
Portoroz is named after the church of St. Mary of Roses, built in this
area in the 13th century, hence the name Porto Rose (”the port of
roses”) for the port.
This area was inhabited by many nations: the Langobards (Lombards), the
Avars, the Slavs, the French, the Venetians, the Austrians and finally the
Italians who reigned the territory until the end of the Second World War.
In the Middle Ages, the Benedictines started to develop the health
tourism. They used the concentrated sea salt and sea mud from the
nearby salt works to heal rheumatic and skin diseases. Not before the
19th century does the health tourism start to flourish and many villas
and hotels for tourists started to be built.
Today
Portoroz is one of the biggest and well known tourist centres on the
Slovenian coast. Clean environment, pleasant climate and many modern
hotels offer an extremely pleasant vacation. The local airport connects
Portoroz with all parts of Europe, and the nearby marina is a safe base
for nautical tourism.
Less than an hour car drive from Portoroz, you can find two beautiful
and well known caves: Postojna and Skocjan. Across the border, in
Croatia, there are beautiful picturesque towns - Porec, Rovinj and Pula.
If you decide to go the other direction, you can visit Venice in Italy,
which you can reach by powerboat (only two hours drive).
Walking or jogging along the beach, swimming in pools or sea, wellness
programmes and sports and recreational centres will surely fill you with
energy. If you want to enjoy the night life, you can visit night clubs,
casinos, open air concerts, restaurants and taverns.
