Location and climate
Izola is an old maritime town, port and tourist destination in Slovenia
situated on a peninsula along the Adriatic coast. Although on the border
of the Mediterranean, the town is characterized by the Mediterranean
climate: warm, dry summers and mild winters. The average temperature
in summer amounts to 28 °C, and in winter to 5 °C.
History and sights
The history of Izola is quite rich and the architecture of the old town
supports this claim. First settlements in this area were established
already in the 1st century on the island that was later on connected
with the mainland (hence the name Isola, which means „island”).
Throughout the history, Izola was mostly ruled by the Venetians. In the
13th century it declared its independence and became an autonomous
town. During that time, it was a strong economic centre; however, its
significance was seriously disrupted when Trieste became the major
harbour of the region in the 16th century.
During the French occupation at the beginning of the 19th century, city
walls were demolished and the rocks were used to join the island with
the rest of the mainland.
Today
Nowadays, Izola is a vivid tourist destination with the rich accommodation
offer and many possibilities for an active holiday (sailing, cycling,
horseback riding and various water sports). You can also go on excursions
around Izola, where you may encounter a rich offer of village tourism.
The town has a marina and two shipyards. The food is mostly
Mediterranean, based on fish, but you can also try some of the local
specialities with the home made olive oil and wine.
