Location and climate
Thanks to a beneficial subtropical micro clime, winter is practically unknown in Menton. Therefore, you can enjoy a beautiful sea and the nearby sunny mountains all year round.
History and sights
The first primitive habitation was grouped around a chateau on the hill of Pépin, west of the current town. In the 13th century the family of Puypin (Podium Pinum) bought the domain from the Genoise family of Vento and built a chateau – that gave birth to the town of Menton.
From the 1300s until the mid-1800s, the city belonged to the royal family of Monaco, the Grimaldis. In 1861, it officially separated from Monaco and became part of France. Around this time, it became a popular destination for vacationing tourists.

Today
Menton is big enough to have most of what the tourist needs, both in season and out: plenty of shops, gardens, museums… Menton hosts a famous Lemon Festival in February. Westward there is a curious 1930's Moorish-style Casino and a long promenade with a clean if pebbly public beach. Behind the town stands a sheltering line of mountains and several ancient villages on high ledges, connected by little lanes and footpaths.
