Bar is a coastal city and a major harbour in Montenegro, connected to the rest of the coast of Montenegro by the Adriatic Highway, which extends on to the Albania. It is situated in the western part of Montenegro, between Budva and Ulcinj. Bar has approximately 270 sunny days per year, and is considered to be one of the sunniest destinations in the southern part of Europe. The climate is Mediterranean, characterized by long, warm summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 15,5°C, whereas the average temperature in July amounts to 23,4°C, and in January to 8,4°C.

History and sights

Archaeological findings point to the fact that Bar existed in the 6th century, and with certainty it was mentioned in the 10th century under the name Antibareos. Various events in the Middle Ages as well as numerous rulers left trace, especially in Old Bar. At the north-western town entrance to Bar you can find the parochial house of Montenegro metropolis, in front of which there is a cross of St. Vladimir of Doclea from the beginning of the 11th century. The important historical and cultural monuments of the town are the Nehaj Fortress (its ruins originate from the 15th century) as well as the castle of King Nicola.

Today

In the last century Bar experienced architectural and urbanistic revival due to its favourable location. It is one of the biggest harbours on the Adriatic, and traffic, trade, tourism as well as food industry are quite developed here. Apart from that, Bar is extremely attractive to nature explorers due to the vicinity of the Skadar Lake (one of the biggest bird reserves) and rich biodiversity of the marine ecosystem. It is also an attractive destination for sailers and nautical enthusiasts as well as for people who just want to enjoy sun and sea. Bar is also well known for the olive tree that is over 2000 years old and is the fourth oldest tree in the world. The cultural life in summer offers various manifestations, such as Bar annals (during which many theatre, concert and literary performances take place), meetings under the old olive tree as well as International television festival.
