Location and climate
It is located in the East Aegean Sea. To the east of Samos is Turkey and
Asia Minor. The Eptastadio channel divides them. Samos is the eighth
in size Greek island and it covers 477,395 square kilometres.
It has two mountains, Kerkis with a height of 1443 metres and
Ambelos with a height of 1160 metres.
The island’s climate is mild, cool during summer and warm in winter.
History and sights
It is an island with an interesting history. According to the myth,
goddess Hera was born on Samos. One of the most famous
philosophers and mathematicians of his age, Pythagoras lived on this
island.
First inhabitants of the island were the Pelasgeans and the Kares.
In ancient times, Samos was a cultural centre. A great culture was
developed on the island and a significant number of famous
people of the time found their home on Samos. According to the
archaeological findings, it flourished during the tyranny of Polykretes,
around 550 BC.
The island’s name, Samos, is of Pheonician origin, and according to
Stravo, it means ‘’rise by the shore’’.
During the Byzantine period, Samos suffered pirate attacks. In 1346, it
fell to the Genovese. Turkish fleet came to Samos in 1549. The pasha
repopulated the island with people from nearby islands, Asia Minor
and Crete.
In 1821, Samos participated in revolt against the Turks. In 1834, the
island was granted independence, but in 1912 it joined Greece.
Today
Samos is one of major tourist attractions of Greece. Thousands of
people visit it all year round.
The island counts 33814 inhabitants and is comprised out of four
municiplities. Its capital is Samos Town.

How to arrive?
By plane
The island’s airport has four international flights daily. There are
regular 45-minutes-long flights from Athens and other airports across
Greece. Starting on the 25th of March and till the 28th of October,
charter flights connect Samos with many European countries.
By car or bus
Taxis and buses are the two means of transport on the island.
By ship
The island has ferry connection with many ports of the Aegean Sea.
A trip with a ferry lasts about 12 hours, and with a speedboat 6 to 8
hours.
