Greece is one of the world's most attractive
yacht charter destinations, and not by a coincidence. Greece has
more than 2000 islands, all with their own distinctive beauty,
typical Mediterranean climate, plenty of sights and excellent
sailing conditions almost year-round.
If you consider yacht charter in
Greece you should know there are several sailing areas in
Greece. The Ionian is considered the
least challenging sailing area with sheltered sailing prevalent
throughout. The Cyclades offers excellent daytime
sailing conditions mixed with exciting nightlife on its famous
islands such as Mykonos, Syros and Ios. Situated in the middle of
the Aegean Sea, the Cyclades is probably the most challenging
sailing area in Greece. The Saronic Gulf combines
very good sailing conditions with a host of islands full of
historic sites. Highlights include Spetses, Poros and the island of
Hydra. Skiathos offers challenging sailing but it
also has access to quiet beaches and the Dodecanese Islands as well
as some other slightly more 'touristy' destinations.
Sailing conditions in Greece are
very diverse; from calm seas and generally light winds around the
Ionian Islands to the excitement sailing around the Cyclades
Islands offers. For something in between, head to the Saronic
Gulf.
Italy on the other hand does not
have as many islands as Greece but it is also a favorite
Mediterranean yacht charter spot. Besides good food, fine wine and
glorious history, Italy has a lot to offer in terms of sailing as
well.
There are four sailing
areas in Italy - the Tuscan Islands, Naples and the Amalfi Coast,
Sicily and Sardinia. Each of these areas has their own
unique charms and are worth the visit.
Sailing season in Italy starts
in May and lasts until late October. The season peaks in
July and August. However, the winds in this period are the
lightest and the moorings are overcrowded.
That is the biggest problem with
sailing in Italy. Moorings and marinas are usually crowded and a
bit too expensive. However, yacht charter in Italy has enough charm
to make up for that.
Sail Greece or sail Italy?
Whatever you choose, you will have a great sailing
holidays.
