Top 7 Fall Regattas in Croatia

The Croatian coast is a paradise sailing destination and it attracts a great number of yachtsmen each year, regardless of the season. The calendar of Regattas in Croatia is packed with opportunities for sailing enthusiasts to race their boats in breathtaking settings.

If you are planning to spend your sailing vacation this fall in Croatia, sailing regattas will for sure add a touch of excitement to your trip. Keep in mind that you do not have to be a sailor to enjoy regattas – you can hire a local skipper and let him manage the boat for you. Apart from participating in an exciting sea race, there are also some onshore festivities you can relish after you hit the finish line!

Take part in a sailing race from Rijeka to Tivat, Montenegro, or from Split to the island of Vis. Sail around the beautiful small islands of Jabuka and Mrduja, and discover stunning coastal towns and attractions onshore. Below, we have listed our favourite regattas which will take place on the Croatian coast this fall.

CRO ORC D-Marin Kup

CRO ORC D-Marin Cup is a series of the most important ORC regattas in Croatia. Its goal is to promote and develop competitive sailing following ORC rules and regulations through cooperation of clubs organizing the regattas and under supervision of Croatian Sailing Federation.

All boats with valid ORC International and ORC Club certificates can compete in the D-Marin ORC Croatian Cup. All crew members must be verified by their National Federations. Certificates for the sailboats in the competition must not be older than three years. We suggest you check out these two ORC regattas which take place in November:

– Croatia Championship (1-4 November 2018)

– ORC Grand Finale (24-25 November 2018)

Thousand Islands Race (20-30 September 2018)

More than 1,000 Adriatic islands run this sailing race and it might as well be the best offshore course that nature has designed. There are two legs and participants can choose to race leg 1 only, leg 2 only, or both legs. First leg is starting on Sunday (Sept 23) in Rijeka, Croatia, and it finishes in Tivat, Montenegro. The prize-giving party is set on Wednesday (Sept 26), and the fleet races back to Rijeka on Thursday (September 27). Another prize giving is scheduled for Saturday (Sept 30) in Rijeka.

Vis Regatta (12-14 October 2018)

The first Vis Regatta took place in 1934 and today, it is one of the most popular regattas in Croatia. Every year, around 150 sailing boats with over 1,000 yachtsmen participate in Vis Regatta. For the participants, the town of Vis and its Tourist Board organize an attractive cultural entertainment program and rich receptions throughout the weekend.

Jabuka Regatta (9-11 November 2018)

The legendary and most beautiful offshore regatta in Croatia, named by the mythical island of Jabuka (Apple), leads sailors on the 110-kilometre long course from Vodice to Jabuka and back to Vodice. What characterizes this regatta is a strong wind and exhaustive sailing, which makes it the most extreme regatta on the Croatian coast.

Mrduja Regatta (29-30 September 2018)

Mrduja Regatta is an annual regatta taking place in the city of Split. It bears its name after the small island of Mrduja, the turning point in the regatta. The first edition of this Mrduja Regatta happened in October 1927, and it is the oldest and the biggest yacht race in Croatia. In the regatta’s 75th edition in 2006, 312 sailboats took part in the competition and sailed a 22 NM long course.

St. Nicholas Regatta (Dec 6 2018)

St. Nicholas Regatta takes place on 6 December in Biograd. It honours St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, seafarers and fishermen. This 160 NM regatta starts in Split and finishes in Komiža, a picturesque small town on the island of Vis. During the regatta, a wreath is laid into the sea to honour deceased sailors. This is the 17th edition of the St. Nicholas Regatta, which used to be a solo sailing-race up until four years ago.

Christmas Regatta (12-16 December 2018)

The traditional Christmas Regatta takes place in Split every year before Christmas. On December 12, the 24th edition of this yacht race will start in front of the Zenta Yacht Club in Split, which organises this event. The sailing route is approximately 13 NM long.
