The Cyclades Islands – an Ideal Off-Season Sailing Destination

Don’t wake up when September ends because you will miss an opportunity to sail in one of the most popular group of islands in the central part of the Aegean Sea in Greece – the Cyclades Islands.

Perfect Weather Conditions

Summers in the Cyclades are warm and sunny, which is typical for the Mediterranean climate. Summers are also affected by the constant blowing of the cooling Meltemi winds that make rough sailing conditions for several days. This is less prominent in September when you can peacefully roam the calm Greek waters.

The average temperature of the air in September range between 19 and 26 °C in September, and of the sea around 23 °C. This makes for a perfect time for swimming, sunbathing and exploring the towns and nature while not feeling scorching hot sun that is reserved for July and August. You will also notice arid landscapes due to the rain being infrequent here. In general, expect pleasant weather and less crowds in marinas.

Best Cyclades Islands

The reason to visit the Cyclades are their most popular islands – Mykonos and Santorini. They are also top destinations in Greece and in the world. Other destinations where you will be able to explore a unique architecture of white and blue houses are Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Ios, Milos, Kea, Siros, Kithnos, and Tinos. Start your island-hopping journey in Lavrion, the sea port and city known for silver mines, or Athens, the modern-ancient cradle of Western civilization, or arrive directly to local airports.

When you moor in Mykonos Marina (locally called the New Port) that provides water and electricity, toilets and showers, and a good shelter from winds, you can indulge in luxurious lifestyle of the town, impeccable sandy and pebbled beaches, and very lively nightlife.

Colorful Santorini is another party destination where you will be able to feast your eyes on deep blue sea, red and black sand, white cliffs and houses, and excellent white and red Greek wines. Bring your yacht to a secure marina in Vilkadha equipped with facilities and amenities you need during your sailing holiday.

To visit Paros, moor in amphitheatrically-built and sheltered Parikia with facilities for all kinds of vessels. Go sightseeing or just relax on golden beaches. As the largest island of them all, Naxos has a lot to offer, from delicious Greek food to magnificent temples and statues to mysterious caves that you can discover with your boat.

    1. Hello Sonia,

Thank you for your question! 🙂

Sailing season in the Cyclades starts in April and ends in November. Sailing conditions in that time frame are ideal, but the high season with the highest air and sea temperatures is from June till September. July and August are most desirable months for sailing in the Cyclades area.

That being said, sailing in early June would be wonderful. Air and sea temperatures are great and there are not as many tourists as during July and August. Your idea sounds lovely 🙂 You can find more information about sailing in that particular area of Greece on the link (https://www.sailingeurope.com/en/yacht-charter/greece/cyclades).

Have a great time sailing in Greece!
