What Size Boat Is Considered a Yacht?

People could say that there is no difference between a boat and a yacht, but English speakers use these two words in a different context. A ‘boat’ is a more generic term than ‘yacht’. People usually refer to anything from large cargo ships small fishing boats to as a ‘boat‘. A yacht is not usually a small vessel. To qualify as a yacht, the vessel should be 35 feet (10.67 m) or longer. Additionally, a super yacht is over 100 feet long, while a mega yacht is over 200 feet long.

How Much Does a Boat Cost?

If you love sailing and enjoy spending your time on the sea, this is a great opportunity for you to buy a boat. However, you have to be aware of the fact that boats take a lot of responsibility and investment. When you buy a boat, you have to prepare yourself for spending twice as much in the years to come because there are lots of additional expenses to take into account, such as fuel, maintenance, insurance, upgrades, yacht crew and dockage. The bigger the boat, i.e. yacht, the more money you will spend maintaining it.

You will also need a bigger crew (you’ll have to pay for their training and insurance), more space for docking, which means even more expenses. Fuel is another important thing to take into consideration. If you own a mega yacht, be prepare yourself for spending around $400,000 on fuel and $350,000 on dockage a year.

Even if you buy a small boat, you have to invest in it, take care of it and preserve its value. They are, of course, low maintenance in comparison to bigger yachts. Everything depends on your own choice – the type of boat and its size will later determine all the other costs.

How Much Does a Small Yacht Cost?

As mentioned above, there are a few types of yachts available for sale. It is to expect that the smaller the yacht, the less expensive it will be. Also, mega yacht and super yacht owners clearly have very deep pockets. There are a lot of factors that determine the price of a yacht – its size, its age, the manufacturer, whether it is custom-built, whether it is new or not etc.

A small yacht is a motor vessel with a hull under 14m. Smaller yachts have a better performance than bigger ones, they are comfortable and have enough space for a cabin and a galley, as well as sunbathing area. They are easy to maneuver and offer the most attractive prices. The price range of smaller yachts goes from around $100,000 onward. The used ones are naturally less expensive, but that doesn’t mean they are not in a good condition.

It can also happen that a used yacht is more expensive than a new one, which is impacted by the value of the yacht manufacturer. However, today you can find lots of second-hand yachts that were upgraded by their previous owners, they are in good shape and their prices are extremely acceptable. So, if you are looking for a yacht for sale, but don’t want to spend a fortune, check the second-hand deals.

How Much Does a 100-foot Yacht Cost?

As already mentioned above, there are a lot of factors that need to be taken in consideration when determining the price of the boat/yacht. Generally, yachts over 100 feet, i.e. mega yachts cost at least $1 million per 3.3 feet – costs for upkeep are not included. However, it all depends on the manufacturer, the age and the condition (whether they are new or used), which means that there are yachts over 100 feet that cost less than a million, while there are some whose price can go up to $50,000,000.
